What “rugged” means
Built to keep working in tough conditions: dust, water, drops, vibration, heat and cold. Look for:
- IP rating for dust and water
- MIL‑STD‑810H tests for drops, shock, vibration, temperature
IP ratings (quick guide)
-
IP68
- 6 = Dust‑tight
- 8 = Immersion protection, typically up to 1.5 m for 30 min
- Good for rain, mud, accidental submersion
-
IP69K
- 6 = Dust‑tight
- 9K = High‑pressure, high‑temperature water jets
- Good for pressure‑washing and intense spray
-
Bottom line
- IP68 = immersion
- IP69K = pressure‑wash
- Many rugged models have both
MIL‑STD‑810H (durability tests)
Common methods manufacturers use:
- Drops and shock (up to 1.5m on flat surfaces)
- Vibration (vehicles, machinery)
- High/low temperature
- Humidity
- Sand and dust
- Immersion
Care and limits
- Always close port covers and dry the device before charging
- Avoid solvents, oils, or salt buildup; rinse with fresh water after seawater exposure
- Do not exceed rated drop heights, immersion depth/time, or pressure‑wash proximity
- Physical damage to screens, ports, or seals is not covered by standard warranties
